What Sam is like
Sam is the best-known dune area near Jaisalmer and the one most visitors picture when they think of the Thar. The dunes here are tall, rolling and wide open, and the main area is lively from mid-afternoon until well after dark. Camel strings, jeeps, quad bikes, snack stalls and photographers all share the sand, and a long line of camps sits along the road nearby.
It is not a wilderness experience. At peak times it can feel crowded and noisy, and some camps play loud music in the evening. But if you want an easy, fun desert evening with plenty to do, Sam delivers. If you prefer quiet, read our Khuri dunes page too.
Things to do at Sam
Camel rides
A short ride on the main dunes usually costs around ₹100–300 per camel, and a longer sunset safari around ₹500–900. Two people often share one camel. If you want the desert to yourself, ask about an overnight camel safari with a dune camp, which tends to run ₹2,500–5,000 per person depending on inclusions.
Jeeps, quad bikes and air sports
Jeep dune-bashing is a fast, bumpy ride over the crests, typically ₹1,000–2,500 per jeep shared by up to six people. Quad bikes cost about ₹500–1,000 for a short loop. Jeep-towed parasailing (₹800–1,000) and paramotor flights (₹2,500–3,500) are offered in season. These are informal operations, so look at the equipment, ask about helmets and harnesses, and skip anything that looks poorly maintained.
Sunset, the evening show and the stars
Sunset is the main event. Afterwards most camps put on a folk music and Kalbeliya dance evening with dinner, often included in the stay or charged at up to Up to ₹500 per person. Once the lights go down, walk a little away from the camps to see the stars. Sunrise the next morning is calmer and just as beautiful.
Staying overnight in a camp
Camps range from simple tents to cottage-style luxury. As a rough guide for two people per night, usually with dinner, breakfast and the evening programme: budget camps around ₹1,500–3,000, standard Swiss-tent camps around ₹3,000–6,000, luxury camps around ₹8,000–18,000, and premium boutique camps from ₹20,000–45,000.
Most camps run roughly from October to March, and many close or scale down in the hot months. Christmas, New Year and the Desert Festival push prices up sharply. Camps set back from the main strip are usually quieter; ask about location and music hours before you book. You can compare options on our stays page or look at a ready-made Sam overnight package.
Getting there and combining
Sam is ~42 km · 50–60 min west of the city by road. Most people come by taxi or with a camp pickup, stopping at Kuldhara and sometimes Lodurva on the way. Aim to arrive by mid-afternoon so you have time to settle in before sunset. The Desert National Park lies further along in the same direction if you want an early-morning wildlife drive.
Practical notes
- Prices on the dunes are negotiated. Agree the price, the duration and what is included before you climb on.
- Nights from November to February can be cold; pack a warm layer even if the day was hot.
- Carry sunglasses and a scarf for blowing sand, and a zip bag for your phone.
- Be firm but polite with touts who follow you on the approach road.
Tips for your visit
- Arrive by around 3 pm to enjoy the dunes before the sunset crowd.
- Fix camel and jeep prices and ride length before you start.
- Ask your camp where it sits on the strip and how late the music runs.
- Walk away from the camp lights after dinner for proper stargazing.
- Book early for Christmas, New Year and the Desert Festival.
- Pack a warm layer for winter nights on the sand.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Sam Dunes from Jaisalmer city?
~42 km · 50–60 min by road. A taxi for the round trip is the easiest option; see cab fares.
How much time do I need at Sam Dunes?
Plan for Afternoon + overnight.
Is Sam too crowded?
It can be busy, especially at sunset in peak season and on holiday weekends. The crowds thin quickly if you walk a few dunes away from the main area, or visit at sunrise. Camps further from the main strip are also quieter.
Sam or Khuri: which should I choose?
Choose Sam for more activities, more camp choice and a lively atmosphere. Choose Khuri for a quieter, more village-like feel. Both have good dunes; our Sam vs Khuri guide compares them in detail.
Are the adventure activities safe?
Most rides are run informally by local operators. Check the vehicle and gear, ask for a helmet on quad bikes, avoid anything that feels rushed, and skip rides if you have back or neck problems.
Can I visit Sam in summer?
You can go for sunset, but it is very hot from April to June and many camps close. The comfortable season runs from roughly October to March.
