The short answer
Choose Sam if you want big, rolling dunes, jeeps and quad bikes, and a buzzing evening with lots going on. Choose Khuri if you prefer a calmer night, a real village around you and a longer, slower camel ride. If you want the big dunes without the noise, look at the private dunes near Kanoi or beyond the main Sam strip.
Neither is "better". They suit different travellers, and your choice mostly decides how loud and busy your evening will be. Price is a smaller factor than people expect, because both areas have camps at similar levels and activity rates are close.

Who should choose Sam
- First-time visitors who want the picture-postcard dunes.
- Families with teenagers and friend groups who want jeep dune-bashing (about ₹1,000–2,500 per jeep) and quad bikes.
- Short trips. Sam is well set up for a same-day sunset visit with a choice of camps if you decide to stay.
- Luxury seekers. Most of the high-end camps are in the Sam area.
The trade-off is crowds. At sunset in season, the main dunes can feel like a fairground. Walk ten minutes away from the parking area and it gets calmer quickly.
Who should choose Khuri
- Couples and solo travellers who want a peaceful night and a dark sky.
- Slow travellers interested in village life, painted mud walls and local food.
- Overnight camel trekkers. Khuri is a common starting point for treks, at about ₹2,500–5,000 per person.
- Budget travellers. Hut stays and homestays are simple and good value.
The dunes are lower and the choice of activities is narrower. If a big dramatic ridge is what you have in mind, Khuri may feel modest. Our Khuri village overnight package shows how a stay here usually runs.
The third option: private dunes near Kanoi and beyond Sam
Between the city and the main Sam strip, around the village of Kanoi, and on some dunes beyond Sam, a handful of camps sit on their own stretch of sand. You get dunes of a similar character to Sam without the neighbour's loudspeaker.
These camps are usually standard to premium, roughly ₹3,000–6,000 at the lower end and ₹20,000–45,000 at the top. Many include a private sunset camel ride and a dinner on the dunes. They suit couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants quiet with comfort. Ask how far the camp is from the main strip and whether the dunes nearby are open sand or scrub.
One caution: the word "private" is used loosely in listings. Some camps described that way still sit within earshot of the busy strip. Ask for a map pin and look at the satellite view before you pay a deposit. A camp that is truly on its own will usually be happy to show you.
What an evening feels like in each
At Sam, the sunset hour is busy. Rows of camels wait at the edge of the dunes, jeeps roar past, vendors sell tea and snacks, and photographers hunt for a clear patch of sand. After dark, the camps light up and the folk shows begin. It is colourful and fun, and many families love the energy. If you want to sleep early, it can be frustrating.
At Khuri, the day winds down more gently. A few camels head out towards the dunes, village children play nearby and cooking smoke drifts over the huts. The folk music is usually smaller and ends earlier. On a clear winter night the sky is very dark, and stargazing is one of the best parts of the stay.
Either way, the dunes are best at sunrise, when the crowds are gone and the wind has smoothed the sand. Set an alarm; it is worth it.
Getting there and what it costs
Sam and Khuri are on different roads out of the city, so plan for one or the other on a single afternoon. There is no reliable public transport for a sunset visit and a late return, so most travellers use a private car or a camp transfer.
A car from the city to either dune area and back costs roughly ~₹2,350 in a small car, depending on waiting time. Many camp packages include the transfer, so compare the total before you book separately. Our cab fares page gives estimates for larger vehicles.
Once there, activity prices are similar in both places. A sunset camel ride is about ₹500–900 per camel. Khuri operators sometimes charge a little less, but the difference is rarely large enough to decide on price alone.
Combining the dunes with Kuldhara, Khaba and the national park
Both dune areas sit on routes that pass other sights, so plan a loop rather than a straight run.
For Sam: leave the city after lunch, visit Kuldhara (~18 km · 30 min, entry ~₹10 for Indians) and Khaba Fort (entry ~₹50) if time allows, then reach Sam for sunset. Kuldhara closes around sunset, so go early.
For Khuri: Khuri lies close to parts of the Desert National Park. An early-morning visit to the park after a night in Khuri is the most natural pairing. Entry is about ~₹100 for Indians, and permits are issued by the forest department.
You can also book a car for the whole loop through our local sightseeing cab page.
