Jaisalmer Itinerary: 1 to 4 Days

Two days is the sweet spot for Jaisalmer: one for the golden fort and old city, one for the desert and a night under the stars. Here are plans for one to four days, with timings that work around the heat.

How many days do you need?

  • 1 day: the fort, one haveli and a dune sunset. Rushed but possible.
  • 2 days: the city properly, plus a camp night at Sam or Khuri. Best for most people.
  • 3 days: adds Lodurva, Kuldhara at a relaxed pace, or Desert National Park.
  • 4 days: adds the long day trip to Tanot and Longewala near the border.

The plans assume winter hours. In warmer months, move sightseeing earlier and rest through the afternoon. Check current sightseeing timings before you set out.

One day in Jaisalmer

  1. 8:00 Enter Jaisalmer Fort. See the Jain temples first; visitors are usually allowed about 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
  2. 10:00 The palace museum, then a walk along the ramparts.
  3. 12:00 Lunch, then Patwon ki Haveli.
  4. 14:30 Drive out via Kuldhara, which closes around sunset.
  5. 16:30 Sunset at Sam dunes with a short camel ride, then back to town or stay at a camp.

Sleep: a desert camp if you can; otherwise a hotel near the fort.

This plan works best if you arrive on an overnight train and leave on one the next night. Hire a car with a driver for the afternoon so you are not bargaining for transport at each stop. If the fort museum queue is long, see the ramparts first and come back later; the museum usually stays open until about 6:00 PM.

Two days: city and a desert night

Day 1: the golden city

  1. Sunrise at Gadisar Lake.
  2. 8:30 The fort, Jain temples and palace museum, ideally with a licensed guide.
  3. 13:00 Lunch, then Patwon ki Haveli, Nathmal ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli.
  4. Sunset at Vyas Chhatri, then dinner on a rooftop facing the lit fort.

Sleep: a heritage haveli or hotel near the fort.

Day 2: into the desert

  1. Morning free for markets, or sunrise at Bada Bagh.
  2. 13:30 Check out and drive to Kuldhara and Khaba Fort.
  3. 16:00 Reach your camp, then a sunset camel ride and jeep safari.
  4. Evening folk music, dinner and stargazing.

Sleep: a desert camp at Sam, or Khuri for a quieter night. Leave after sunrise the next morning. Our 2-night package follows this plan.

You can flip the order if the camp has space on your first night: arrive, drive straight out to the dunes, then spend day two in the city after sunrise on the sand. That works well for early-morning train arrivals, when your city room may not be ready anyway.

Pack a small overnight bag for the camp and leave the big suitcase at your city hotel. Camps are cold after dark in winter, so bring a warm layer even if the afternoon feels hot.

Three days: slower, with more of the desert

Follow the two-day plan, then add a third day before or after the camp night:

  • Morning: Desert National Park for birds and chinkara, best at first light, or the fossil park.
  • Midday: the Jain temple at Lodurva, ~16 km · 25–30 min from town.
  • Afternoon: rest, shop for textiles, or visit a small museum.
  • Evening: Gadisar at dusk or a puppet show in town.

Sleep: two nights in the city and one in a camp. The 3-night package swaps this day for the border trip.

A third day also lets you split the desert in two: Sam for the lively sunset scene on one evening, and a quiet Khuri village walk on another. Or spend the extra time simply sitting on a rooftop café watching the light change on the fort walls. That unhurried hour is often the part of a trip that stays with you.

Four days: add Tanot and Longewala

Add a full day for the border belt, ~120 km · 2–2.5 hr each way.

  1. 7:00 Leave town with water and snacks; fuel up before Ramgarh.
  2. 10:00 Tanot Mata temple and its shell museum.
  3. 12:30 Longewala War Memorial, the tanks and the short film.
  4. Evening back in Jaisalmer before dark.

Sleep: in the city, so you are not driving the long road twice. Read the permit guide first; rules differ for foreign nationals.

The best order over four days is usually city, desert camp, back to the city, then the border trip, so you are not doing two long drives in a row. Keep the border day flexible: access can be restricted at short notice when there is tension in the area, and you do not want it to be the only thing you came for.

What to skip if you are short on time

  • Pick one or two havelis instead of all three; Patwon ki Haveli is the fullest.
  • Choose Kuldhara or Lodurva, not both, on a one-day visit.
  • Skip quad bikes and parasailing if you only have one sunset; the camel ride and the view matter more.
  • Leave Tanot and Longewala for a longer trip. The drive alone takes most of a day.
  • Do not skip the Jain temples by arriving late; they close to visitors around midday.

What you should not cut is the sunset. Whether it is on the dunes, at Vyas Chhatri or from a rooftop, the hour when the stone turns gold is the reason the city has its nickname.

Cost sketch: two days for a couple

A rough do-it-yourself budget for two, excluding food, flights and trains:

ItemApprox. for two
City hotel, 1 nightunder ₹3,500 / night (economy) or ₹3,500–8,000 / night (comfort)
Standard desert camp, 1 night with meals₹3,000–6,000
Sedan with driver, 2 local days₹4,400
Tickets for two Indian visitors (fort museum, Patwon, Bada Bagh, Kuldhara)~₹820
Sunset camel ride (one camel for two)₹500–900
Jeep safari (whole jeep)₹1,000–2,500
Half-day licensed guide₹800–1,500
Indicative ranges; foreign visitors pay higher ticket prices. Confirm current rates locally.

Leaving out the city hotel, that comes to roughly ₹10,520–16,120 for two. As a comparison, our 2-night package starts from about ₹6,950 per person, or around ₹13,900 for two at that lowest rate. The lowest rate usually applies to larger groups, so a couple may pay somewhat more per head; the package page shows the price for your group size. Frequently asked questions

Are 2 days enough for Jaisalmer?

For most people, yes. One day covers the fort and havelis, and the second takes you to the dunes for a camp night.

Can I see Jaisalmer in one day?

You can see the highlights, but it is rushed. Start early at the fort and end with sunset at Sam.

Should I stay in the city or at a desert camp?

Ideally both: one night near the fort and one at a camp. In summer, when most camps close, stay in the city and visit the dunes for sunset.

Is it worth adding Tanot and Longewala?

If you have four days and an interest in history, yes. It is a long drive of ~120 km · 2–2.5 hr each way.

Sam or Khuri for the camp night?

Sam is livelier with more activities; Khuri is quieter and more village-like. See our Sam vs Khuri guide.

How much does a 2-day Jaisalmer trip cost for a couple?

Packages start from about ₹6,950 per person at the lowest group rate; couples may pay a little more per head. A do-it-yourself trip can cost more or less depending on your hotel and camp.
